The MAX7219 is an integrated serial input/output common-cathode display driver that can be connected to a microprocessor with an 8-digit 7-segment digital LED display. It can also be connected to a bar graph display or 64 separate LEDs. The device includes an on-chip BCD encoder, multi-channel scanning loop word drive, and an 8x8 static RAM for data storage.
With a convenient four-wire serial interface, the MAX7219 can connect to any general-purpose microprocessor. Each data can be individually addressed for updates without the need to rewrite the entire display. The device also allows users to select coding or non-coding for each data.
The MAX7219 features a low-power shutdown mode, analog and digital brightness control, a scan-limit register for displaying 1-8 bits of data, and an LED light detection mode. With only three IO ports, it can drive a dot-matrix display with flicker-free performance. The module supports cascading with multiple modules.
