The MAX660 monolithic charge-pump voltage inverter is designed to convert a +1.5V to +5.5V input to a corresponding -1.5V to -5.5V output. With the capability to provide up to 100mA output using just two low-cost capacitors, this inverter serves as a cost-effective alternative to switching regulators, eliminating the need for inductors and reducing size, cost, and EMI.
Featuring greater than 90% efficiency over most of its load-current range and operating with a typical current of only 120µA, the MAX660 is well-suited for both battery-powered and board-level voltage conversion applications. It can even double the output voltage of a power supply or battery, delivering +9.35V at 100mA from a +5V input.
The MAX660 offers flexibility with a frequency control (FC) pin that allows selection between 10kHz typ or 80kHz typ (40kHz min) operation to optimize capacitor size and quiescent current. The oscillator frequency can be adjusted with an external capacitor or driven by an external clock.
This voltage inverter is a pin-compatible, high-current upgrade of the ICL7660 and is available in 8-pin DIP and small outline packages across commercial, extended, and military temperature ranges.
