The 74LS166 is a parallel-in or serial-in, serial-out shift register with a complexity of 77 equivalent gates. It features gated clock inputs and an overriding clear input. The shift/load input determines the mode of operation, enabling either parallel-in or serial-in mode. Clocking is done on the low-to-high level edge of the clock pulse via a two-input positive NOR gate.
Switching transients are minimized and system design is simplified with input clamping diodes. The LS166 allows for synchronous loading on the next clock pulse when in parallel mode. Serial data flow is inhibited during parallel loading. Clocking can be enabled or inhibited based on the clock inputs' logic levels.
A buffered direct clear input overrides all other inputs, including the clock, setting all flip-flops to zero.
