The 74LS161 comes with a 4-bit binary counter designed for synchronous reversible up-down counting. The internal carry look-ahead feature enhances high-speed counting designs by preventing spikes during normal counting operations.
With synchronous operation provided by all flip-flops clocked simultaneously, the outputs change simultaneously based on count-enable inputs and internal gating. This eliminates output counting spikes associated with asynchronous counters.
The buffered clock input triggers the four flip-flops on the rising fringe of the clock input waveform. The counter is fully programmable, allowing presetting of outputs to a specific level by setting low or high.
The load input circuitry enables loading with the carry-enable output of cascaded counters. The synchronous clear function sets all flip-flop outputs low with a low level at the clear input, regardless of clock, load, or enable inputs.
Buffered clock down, up, and load inputs reduce drive requirements, minimizing the need for additional clock drivers in long parallel words.
The 74LS161 is designed with diode-clamped inputs and offers typical propagation time of 14 ns from clock to Q output, clock frequency of 32 MHz, and power dissipation of 93mW.
The clear function is synchronous, allowing easy modification of the count length. The gate output connected to the clear input synchronously clears the counter to all low outputs.
