The 74HC40105 is a first-in/first-out (FIFO) "elastic" storage register that can store 16 4-bit words. It can handle input and output data at different shifting rates, making it ideal as a buffer between asynchronous systems.
Each word position in the register is clocked by a control flip-flop, with a logic 1 indicating filled data and a logic 0 denoting vacancy. The control flip-flop communicates status to the succeeding flip-flop, transferring data and resetting the preceding flip-flop when necessary.
All empty locations automatically move to the input end, while valid data ripples through to the output end. The status of the first control flip-flop (DIR) indicates if the FIFO is full, and the last flip-flop (DOR) shows if the FIFO contains data.
Inputs feature clamp diodes for current limiting resistors to interface with voltages exceeding VCC.
