Tantalum capacitors are a subtype of electrolytic capacitors made of tantalum metal acting as an anode, covered by a thin oxide layer serving as the dielectric, and surrounded by a conductive cathode. They offer higher capacitance per volume, superior frequency characteristics, and long-term stability. While generally polarized, they provide efficient performance in various circuits, commonly used in laptops, automotive, and cell phones.
The downside of tantalum capacitors is their potential failure mode leading to thermal runaway, fires, and explosions. However, this risk can be mitigated by incorporating external failsafe devices like current limiters or thermal fuses.
