A toroid is a coil of insulated wire wound on a donut-shaped form made of powdered iron. It is used in electronic circuits as an inductor, especially at low frequencies where large inductances are needed. Toroids work by boosting the frequency to appropriate levels, storing energy in the form of magnetic fields. The turns in a toroid induce a higher frequency, making them more economical and efficient than solenoids.
