The L6219 is a bipolar monolithic integrated circuit designed for controlling and driving bipolar stepper motors or bidirectionally controlling two DC motors. With a few external components, the L6219 forms a complete control and drive circuit for LS-TTL or microprocessor-controlled stepper motor systems. The power stage consists of a dual full bridge capable of sustaining 46 V and includes four diodes for current recirculation.
A cross-conduction protection feature is provided to prevent simultaneous cross-conduction during switching current direction. The internal pulse-width-modulation (PWM) controls the output current to 750 mA with a peak startup current of up to 1 A. The L6219 allows a wide range of current control from 750 mA (each bridge) through two logic inputs and an external voltage reference.
Each bridge of the L6219 has a phase input that determines the load current direction. Additionally, the IC is equipped with thermal protection circuitry that disables the outputs if the chip temperature exceeds safe operating limits.
