The DB9 connector is part of the D-sub miniature (D-sub) connector plug and socket family. DB9 pins are arranged in rows of two, with one five-pin row above a four-pin row. Designed to work with the EIA/TIA 232 serial interface standard, DB9 connectors were commonly used for serial peripheral devices like keyboards, mice, and joysticks. While modern interfaces have replaced DB9 in many applications, legacy devices still use it for serial communication.
