CD4518 consists of two identical, internally synchronous 4-stage counters. The counter stages are D-type flip-flops with interchangeable CLOCK and ENABLE lines for incrementing on positive or negative transitions. For single-unit operation, the ENABLE input is kept high, and the counter advances on each positive transition of the CLOCK. The counters can be cascaded in ripple mode by connecting Q4 to the enable input of the subsequent counter while holding the CLOCK input of the latter low. The CD4518 types come in various package options including hermetic dual-in-line ceramic, dual-in-line plastic, small-outline, and thin shrink small-outline packages.
The CD4518 IC is suitable for applications like multistage synchronous counting, multistage ripple counting, and frequency dividers.
