Solder is a fusible metal alloy used to join metal workpieces with a melting point below the workpiece(s). Soft solder, with a melting range of 90 to 450 °C, is commonly used in electronics, plumbing, and sheet metal assembly. Manual soldering uses a soldering iron or gun. Alloys melting between 180 and 190 °C are most common. Soldering with alloys above 450 °C is called brazing.
Solder is used where robotic parts don't experience high forces or pressure changes.
Types of Solder:
- Lead solder: Tin/lead alloys with concentrations between 5% and 70%. Higher tin content increases tensile and shear strength. Common alloys: 60/40 Tin/lead (Sn/Pb) and 63/37 Sn/Pb.
- Lead-free solder: Contains tin, copper, silver, bismuth, indium, zinc, antimony. Melting points slightly higher than lead solders.
- Flux-core solder: Contains flux as a reducing agent to improve electrical connection and mechanical strength. Types: acid flux and rosin flux.
- Hard solder: Used for brazing at higher temperatures. Common alloys include copper with zinc or silver.
The residue is easy to remove by hot air after soldering work if necessary.
