The 74LS96 shift register consists of five RS master-slave flip-flops, enabling parallel-to-serial or serial-to-parallel conversion of binary data. With accessible inputs and outputs for all flip-flops, it allows for versatile operation. Clearing the register sets all flip-flops to a low output level, independent of the clock input.
For parallel loading, the clear and preset inputs are used. Data is loaded by setting individual preset inputs (A, B, C, D, and E) to the desired values and applying a high-level load pulse to the preset enable input. Information transfer to the outputs occurs on the positive-going edge of the clock pulse, requiring proper setup at the RS inputs of each flip-flop before the rising edge.
The serial input feeds information to the first flip-flop, while subsequent flip-flops provide data for the remaining inputs. It is crucial that the clear input is low and the preset or preset enable inputs are low during clocking.
