Tantalum capacitors are a subtype of electrolytic capacitors made of tantalum metal acting as an anode, covered by a thin oxide dielectric layer. They offer higher capacitance per volume, superior frequency characteristics, and excellent stability over time. The downside of tantalum capacitors is their failure mode, which can lead to thermal runaway. However, this risk can be mitigated with external failsafe devices like current limiters or thermal fuses.
