India's PCB Market: Growth, Imports, and Future Outlook

The Indian printed circuit board (PCB) market is undergoing a transformation, marked by rapid growth, rising domestic demand, and a persistent reliance on imports. Experts at the Bengaluru Tech Summit recently highlighted that 85% of India's PCB demand is currently met through imports, underscoring the urgent need for local manufacturing scale-up and semiconductor industry development.

Current Market Landscape

India's PCB market was valued at approximately USD 6.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 24.7 billion by 2033, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.58%. Despite this surge, the country imported nearly 88% of its bare PCB requirements in 2024-25, amounting to $3.7 billion out of a total demand of $4.2 billion. Local manufacturing currently contributes only about $600 million, but domestic sourcing has seen a remarkable CAGR of 27.3% over the past three years.

Drivers of Growth

The growth in India's PCB market is fueled by strong domestic demand from key sectors such as consumer electronics, electric vehicles (EVs), and industrial electronics. The government's initiatives, including Make-in-India, the Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (ECMS), and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, have played a pivotal role in encouraging local manufacturing. Additionally, the imposition of anti-dumping duties on imported bare PCBs has provided a boost to domestic producers.

Consumer electronics remains the largest segment, accounting for over 40% of PCB usage in India. The rise of 5G technology, IoT devices, and advanced automotive electronics is further stimulating demand for high-density interconnect (HDI) and multilayer PCBs. The automotive sector, particularly with the growth of EVs and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), is also a significant market driver.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the progress, India faces several challenges in achieving self-reliance in PCB manufacturing. The country remains heavily dependent on imports for high-grade raw materials such as copper laminates, specialty chemicals, and advanced PCBs. This dependency not only affects the quality and performance of the final products but also exposes the industry to supply chain disruptions and cost escalations.

However, the situation is changing. Large investments, new projects, and strategic partnerships are signaling confidence in India's potential. The government's push for electronics parks and intelligent manufacturing zones, especially in industrial states like Maharashtra and Gujarat, is facilitating the expansion of production capacity and specialization in high-value PCBs. The ongoing investments in automation, design capability, and process reliability are expected to help India not only meet its domestic requirements but also become a trusted global source for PCB manufacturing.

Future Prospects

With continued investment in manufacturing capabilities and compliance with global standards, India is well-positioned to become a high-volume and high-value PCB manufacturing destination. The country's competitive labor costs, improving quality standards, and government incentives are helping Indian manufacturers penetrate global value chains. Exports of multilayer and HDI PCBs are growing, and flexible PCBs for wearables, automotive sensors, and telecom applications offer lucrative opportunities.

Experts believe that if the current momentum continues and the supply chain matures alongside demand growth, India could convert from a heavy importer to a global manufacturing center in the coming years. The projection of $14 billion by 2030 for the PCB manufacturing sector seems achievable, provided that the industry continues to invest in automation, design, and process reliability.
